Thomas and Lucy are buried in Mt Moriah Cemetery in Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee. Their stones read: Thomas McKissack Departed this life the 24th of April 1826 Aged 70 years 5 months Lucy's reads Lucy McKissack Amiable Consort of Thomas McKissack, departed this life the 25th day of July 1825, Aged 77 years 4 months 3 days Thomas served in the Revolutionary War and was at Valley Forge that terrible winter with George Washington......he moved to Tennessee and probably got bounty land there for his service in the Continental Army. He had many descendants in Tennessee and there were some colorful characters there. He served in Revolutionary War--Capt. Bullard's Company, Colonel Patton's NC regiment as a private. Death information taken from the book "Maury Co., Tenn. cousins" by the Maury Co., Historical Society of Tennessee. Pension records show that he lived in Giles Co., TN.

Thomas McKissack bought land in Jones County, GA, in 1812. Tax records in 1813, indicate that Thomas McKissack bought land that later became part of a famous plantation, the Jarrell Plantation, which is today a state park and museum near Macon, GA.

Thomas and Mary were massacred by Indians, May 9, 1836, during the Creek Indian War* in Alabama as they were fleeing toward safety in Columbus, Ga from their plantation in Russell Co Alabama. Thomas had lived in Ga, then went to Henry Co Al and had land there. When the Indian land opened up in upper Alabama, he got land there and moved up to Russell Co Al. He had a big plantation there. When the Creek Indians began their revolt, he along with other people started fleeing up the Old Federal Road toward Columbus Ga and safety. But they didnt make it and were killed along with their overseer as they were in the first wagon. It was said their bodies were taken to Fort Mitchell, Alabama and buried but we have found no record of that. David McKissack went to Fort Mitchell but had no luck.

* Creek is the European name given to the Muscogee Indians because of their geographic location (living near creeks). In the 1500's the Muscogee occupied nearly all of what is the southeast United States. In the 1600's, the Cherokee, and later the Europeans, drove them west to Alabama and finally to what is now Oklahoma.

in 1789, a number of Scotch-Irish and Huguenot descent settlers from North Carolina and Virginia came. Many of these new settlers took up residence on the east banks of the Oconee River. This was the "frontier line," as the Treaty of 1783 had made the Oconee the boundary between the Whites and the Indians. From that time there was trouble between the two: the settlers on the east side and the Indians on the west side. The Indians would slip across the river and steal; the Whites would retaliate. The Whites would entice the Indians across the river, make them drunk and rob them; the Indians would in turn retaliate. Finally, in 1802, the government extinguished the Creeks' title to the lands lying west of the River. This land then was divided into Wayne, Wilkinson and Baldwin Counties and distributed by land lottery. The part of Laurens County which is west of the River came from Wilkinson County. Generally, then, the portion of land east of the River was Head-Right Land Grant, and the portion west of the Oconee was of the Land Lottery System.
